Fees & funding
We believe in clear, transparent pricing. Here's how funding works at LB Solicitors.
1. Legal Aid (free representation)
Police-station representation is free of charge to everyone, regardless of income — this is paid for by the Legal Aid Agency. If you or a family member is at a police station, ask for Lucy by name and there will be no cost to you.
In court, Legal Aid is means-tested. We will assess your eligibility at our first meeting. If you qualify, your representation in the Magistrates' or Crown Court will also be free or substantially funded.
2. Fixed fees for motoring offences
For most motoring offences we offer fixed fees so you know exactly what your defence will cost from the outset. These cover preparation, attendance and advocacy at a single hearing — additional work (e.g. expert evidence, contested trials) is quoted separately and agreed with you in writing in advance.
| Offence / matter | Fixed fee |
|---|---|
| Fixed Penalty Notice review | £250 + VAT |
| Speeding — guilty plea, written representations | £450 + VAT |
| Speeding — contested hearing | from £950 + VAT |
| Totting up / exceptional hardship application | £950 + VAT |
| Drink driving — guilty plea | £750 + VAT |
| Drink driving — contested hearing | from £1,750 + VAT |
| Failing to provide a specimen | from £1,250 + VAT |
| Driving without due care — guilty plea | £650 + VAT |
VAT at the prevailing rate (currently 20%). Court fees, disbursements and counsel's fees are charged separately and disclosed to you in advance. Fees correct as of 2026.

3. Private hourly rates
For matters outside fixed-fee categories we charge a competitive hourly rate of £250 per hour + VAT. You will receive a written estimate of likely costs at the start of your matter and regular updates as the case progresses.
4. Crown Court matters
Crown Court representation is normally funded by Legal Aid. Where private funding is preferred we will provide a detailed cost estimate based on the nature of the case, volume of disclosure and projected counsel's fees.
How we keep costs predictable
- Written cost estimate at the start of every matter
- You will not be charged for work you did not authorise
- Monthly billing with itemised time recording
- Stage-payment plans considered on a case-by-case basis
